Svart Hona (pronounced svart hay-oh-na) AKA Swedish Black Hens are a true melanistic breed- black feathers, skin, bones, and meat.
These are a great smaller size chicken, with lots of personality. They lay small to medium white eggs. Svart Hona are properly a land race in their native land (Sweden), so genetically there is some acceptable variation. We currently have solid black breeding birds but birds with silver leakage or white earlobes are not uncommon to pop up from time to time. One thing that is important to us is the melanization gene, we are careful to only keep birds for breeding with solid black feet and toes, and black or gray mouths.
We find them to be frequent and dedicated broodies, too.
Five (5) day-old Svart Hona chicks, straight run. May be combined with other chicks in an order. Svart Hona are a melanistic breed- their feathers, skin, meat, and bones are all black. They lay medium size white to cream eggs, and the hens tend to broodiness. This is a smaller-size large fowl breed.
